Abstract

Learning substance classification at the junior high school level requires instructional media that can support student engagement through interactive learning activities. This study aims to design and develop EduChem Adventure, an Android-based educational game adopting a 2D Top-Down Role-Playing Game (RPG) concept that integrates substance classification content into exploration and question-based turn-based battle mechanics. Correct answers reduce the enemy’s health point (HP), while incorrect answers reduce the player’s HP, making question answering an integral part of the gameplay. The game was developed using the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC), consisting of Initiation, Pre-Production, Production, Testing, Beta, and Release stages. Product evaluation was conducted through Black Box Testing, media and subject-matter expert validation, and Usability Testing involving 30 junior high school students. The Black Box Testing results showed that all 15 tested functional scenarios operated according to the expected outcomes. Media expert validation achieved 84.00%, categorized as Good, while subject-matter expert validation achieved 96.00%, categorized as Very Good. The usability evaluation obtained an average score of 81.47%, categorized as Very Good. These results indicate that EduChem Adventure functions according to its design, receives positive expert evaluations, and is well accepted by users. Therefore, EduChem Adventure is considered feasible as a supplementary learning medium for substance classification.
